Chinese Standard vs American and British Standards: What Buyers Should Know
When purchasing pipes, fittings, valves, flanges, or meters for pipeline projects, standards are one of the most important factors to confirm. Different markets may use different standards, such as Chinese GB standards, American standards, or British/European standards. Understanding these differences helps buyers avoid product mismatch, installation problems, and project delays.
Chinese standards are commonly used in many domestic and international infrastructure projects, especially for water supply, drainage, irrigation, and municipal engineering. American standards usually refer to systems such as ANSI, ASTM, ASME, AWWA, or API, depending on the product type. British and European standards are often related to BS or EN standards and are widely used in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Commonwealth markets.
The main differences usually appear in material grades, wall thickness, dimensions, pressure ratings, and testing requirements. For example, pipes or fittings with the same nominal size may have different outside diameters, wall thicknesses, or connection dimensions under different standards. This is why buyers should not only compare product names, but also confirm drawings, specifications, and technical data sheets.
Pressure rating is another key point. Common ratings may include PN10, PN16, PN20, PN25, or class-based ratings in American standards. The correct choice depends on working pressure, fluid type, temperature, installation environment, and safety requirements.
Certification also plays an important role. For international projects, buyers may require ISO, CE, WRAS, NSF, UL, FM, SGS inspection, or third-party test reports, depending on the application and market requirements.
